Shirt of the Week VIII

This week to make up for a summer holiday sized gap in Shirt of the Weeks I have a shirt with a difference -you can actually own this one. Yes I’m selling some of my ready to wear samples. They are all the same make as my bespoke ones, in all the top fabrics and they are a super bargain price of £50! What’s the catch ? There are only 1 of each size – so you have to be quick.

The first one is an Alumo Supraluxe stripe, if you look very carefully you will see that I have used two stripes, the collar and cuff is very slightly different. Also one of the most popular Liberty prints Capel,  is in the collar band and under the cuff. As this was a sample I crammed it with features…the collar is a mini cutaway and this is continued in the cuff which is a turnback with a twist, only 2″ deep instead of the normal 2 and 3/4″ cuff.

Now for the vitals – it is a standard 16″ collar, slim fit, but not skinny, I made it so it was slimmer than a traditional Jermyn Street shirt. It’s totally unique and on sale for £50…(don’t forget bespoke is £180 so this is a way to own a Made in England luxury shirt without the hefty price tag)

If you are interested in owning this shirt drop me an email – shirts@lucyadams.co.uk – it’s first come first serve. You can pay via Paypal or credit card.

I’ve been sorting out my sample cupboard and will be posting more special buys in the next couple of days including shirts for ladies, ties, and maybe even a shirt dress or two…

Shirt of the Week VII

I made this recently for a groom-to-be who is getting married in September. He has never had bespoke before and his fiance suggested that he should give it a go for the big day.

I have made them some Liberty print ties in Glenjade too, so we picked it in another colourway to tie in but not match, it also means he has a shirt to wear long after the wedding. The fabric is a white herringbone, herringbone can be very bold sometimes and a little shiny, this is neither and adds texture and weight whilst still looking crisp. I prefer using this on white shirts over poplin as it can be quite see through.

The bottom button hole is in blue to match the Liberty print for a more casual look when it is untucked. The collar is a classic shape, the cuff mitred turnback to show a notch of the print. It has a traditional placket and the collar/cuffs are edge stitched for extra crispness.

If we’re lucky we’ll see the photo of the whole outfit together in September *hints* !

This made me chuckle..

One of my lovely customers emailed me this a couple of days ago, I was sitting out in the garden reading my book and nearly spilt my tea from laughing!

It’s given me an idea or 2 about my new care labels !

Shirt of the Week VI

This week’s shirt was kindly photographed for me by it’s new owner. It’s an Alumo cloth, with a multiple satin stripe in lilac and blue. It has Edenham Liberty print inside the collar and cuff and hot pink button holes.

We decided on smoke mother of pearl buttons to contrast with the colours in the fabric. Note there is no top button, something the customer specifically requested as he never wears a tie, we did however make the first button a little higher so the shirt does not gape too low.

Rock n roll wine

So this isn’t about shirts, or tailoring but I thought some may find it of interest. Last night I went to support my friend Gav at a screening he’d arranged for a film called Blood into Wine. He had rung me a week or so ago saying he’d tweeted under the influence and ended up having 2 weeks to organise this event as the producer of the film would be in London on the 21st. He found a great venue, the RSA, just off the Strand which has a small screening room in the old wine vaults. Perfectly apt for the event!

As a teetotaller I went with no expectation but to support a good friend who has always supported me. The room filled with wine types and PR types and this shirtmaker and we all went in. I was wondering how I’d sit through a 90 minute documentary on wine – and that is when I was surprised.

I like rock music. I also like Kylie so the range is eclectic shall we say and although I’ve heard of ‘Tool‘ I can’t honestly say I’d ever listened properly to one of their songs. So anyway back to the film, turns out..the singer from Tool, Maynard James Keenan turned winemaker in the mid 90s alongside his rock career. He had a vision of growing vines in Arizona, which is mainly desert. The film follows the trials and tribulations of this process. For me however it was Maynard’s personality and character that made the film so interesting to watch. There is a humility and warmth that you wouldn’t expect from the frontman of a rock band. The back story to his wine, which actually is the same as his music was pretty inspiring.

So whether you are into wine, or Tool or neither it’s worth a watch, there are lots of funny moments as well as a couple of poignant ones. Lastly a huge congratulations to Gav for putting it all together. If you want more on wine his blog is here, one day I shall show you the first ever ‘Lucy Adams’ shirt that was for his wedding nearly two years ago now but I’m still waiting on a photo !

All the details on the wine and the film are here.

Shirt of the Week V

It’s all go here, making sure all the shirts are ready before the summer holiday! Here is my latest shirt of the week. Annoyingly my lovely new iPhone camera added these extra shading stripes to the shirt which aren’t actually there! I was testing it out but I think I’ll go back to the old fashioned normal camera in future..

It’s a pale pink and white stripe from Alumo with the pink thread carried through on the button holes. It’s a fantastic summery shirt, note the edge stitiching on the collar and cuff, the customer wanted a ‘sharp’ look and this is the way to achieve it, it adds a certain crispness to the collar especially when open.

Shirt of the Week IV

This is one from earlier this year, I chose it because it has a few of the features that people often request to achieve a more ‘bespoke’ look. Note the slightly darker buttonholes and the James Bond cuff to show off the Liberty print.

This is an Alumo Supraluxe cloth which is a 2 fold 120, it comes in a huge array of colours and these minor details lift an otherwise plain poplin shirt.

Shirt of the Week III

This week’s shirt is an Acorn fabric, which I tend to steer clear of as everything I ever need is always out of stock, but I already had some of this Malham, and it is a nice cloth, the black self stripe gives it a more interesting look, breaking up the plain poplin.

Inside the collar and cuffs is another SS10 Liberty print, called Yasmine’s Poppies, the dark pinks and purples set off the black really well, and the big pattern is a bit different from the usual microfloral look.

Boxer shorts available

I’ve been making these for a while for my customers, usually to match their shirts, but I have also been known to make them in Cashmerello and Soyella Royal 240s cotton! I made some in some different fabrics, this Liberty domino print is a fun yet not too crazy design.

They are available in Small, Medium and Large, all Made in England, in two fits… very roomy and normal.. the ones in the photo are the classic fit extra roomy ones. They start from £25 each and go up depending on the cloth. To order email me: info@lucyadams.co.uk

Grandi & Rubinelli

I was recently sent the new book from Grandi & Rubinelli in Italy, I’ve used them before on occasion, and they have some really lovely cloths, they are generally quite vibrant and colourful, in contrast to Alumo, who as a rule tend to be plainer, more suited to office wear and basic casualwear. So for something a little different Grandi & Rubinelli are a nice alternative, they also have some good silk and linen mixes, ideal for this time of year.
